purpose
Former IU President and Chancellor Dr. Herman B Wells, who made a significant contribution to the development of IU during the 20th century and was beloved and by the students, faculty, and the community for decades, noted in his 1957 speech, “foreign students and scholars must not be casual visitors, but in due course are encouraged to become an integral part of our campus community” (Clark, 2013, para. 37). Dr. Wells devotion for attracting international students almost 60 years ago indicates that the recent increase in the number of international students at IU is not a coincidence. As the international student population continues to grow locally and nationally, it is critical that an institution like IU makes a consistent effort to meet the special needs of international students (Lee & Rice, 2007). Poyrazli and Grahame (2007) particularly emphasize institutional responsibilities for international students’ adjustments through providing proper resources and support for their academic, social, and emotional well-being (p. 39). Global Hoosiers Program is not only our attempt to continue Dr. Herman B Wells’ legacy and align with Provost Lauren Robel’s most recent strategic plan, but it is also a continuation of IU’s institutional commitment for the students’ learning and success.
